Fior d’Italia: Reviews & Ratings
We had an incredible dining experience at Fior d’Italia, America’s oldest Italian restaurant, and it truly lives up to its legacy. If you’re searching for authentic Italian cuisine, fresh pasta, and a memorable dining atmosphere, this is the place to go! We started with the Bruschetta, which was outstanding—perfectly toasted bread topped with ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, and high-quality olive oil that tasted straight from Italy. For our main course, the Tagliatelle was the star of the night. The pasta was fresh, handmade, and cooked to perfection, with a rich and flavorful sauce that made every bite exceptional. We ended with an Affogato, and it was the perfect finish—creamy gelato “drowned” in bold espresso. Simple, classic, and delicious. The ambiance is warm, charming, and full of history. A live singer took requests and performed Italian classics (including “That’s Amore”), which made the entire evening feel magical—like being transported to a trattoria in Italy. Service was fantastic from start to finish—friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu and wine pairings. If you’re looking for authentic Italian food, fresh pasta, terrific service, and a unique historical dining experience, you must visit Fior d’Italia. Perfect for date night, celebrations, or anyone who loves classic Italian done right!
Very warm and comfortable atmosphere. Classic woodwork and white table cloths make you feel like you're in an episode of the Sopranos. But the wait staff make you feel like family. We had a huge, delicious bowl of calamari, a tasty Caesar salad and some of the best lasagna I've ever had. All classic flavors. Like the recipes were 150 years old, which they are. This place has been around 1886. A true classic.
Delicious Osso Buco, Duck and Fute de Mare! Fantastic European style service you get your food and everyone leave you alone. The weighted is not very two minutes asking if you need anything which is nice to sit and have food and talk without being bothered.
I stopped here for dinner on a Saturday evening after discovering it was the oldest Italian restaurant in the USA. We were seated quickly and the food came super fast. The ravioli was good as was the lasagna. the lasagna was quite cheesy which I enjoyed. For dessert I had the cannoli. It had fruit in the filling which was something different from other cannolis I have had. The service here was average. I would definitely recommend giving this a try if you are in the area.
We would definitely come back. Good food, massive portions, very fair prices. Make a reservation. The pasta dishes seem to be more regional than just Napolentean/Roman what I normally see in American Italian restaurants. The noodles were good even the next day. Get what you like, they were all done well. Hard to tell but very huge basket of calamari. Best for 5 or more people to share! I also liked their free bread and mushroom main, though we got it as an appetizer. Service wasn't slow for us like some reviews mention. Quaint ambiance with some live piano.
Fior d’Italia is a true San Francisco gem and one of the most historic Italian restaurants in the country. The atmosphere is warm and classic with old-school charm — perfect for a date night or special dinner. The food was excellent: fresh pasta, rich sauces, and authentic flavors that really stood out. We especially loved the seafood linguine and tiramisu. Service was friendly and attentive, and the wine list had plenty of great pairings. Prices are fair for the quality, history, and ambience you get here. If you’re looking for authentic Italian with a touch of San Francisco history, Fior d’Italia is a must-visit.
America's Oldest Italian Restaurant (est. 1886) did not disappoint! We enjoyed the mussels and clams, homemade gnocchi, and veal shank. Every bite was full of flavor. The atmosphere was relaxed, with a pianist taking requests, which made our meal even more special. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the restaurant, sharing details about its history and fresh pasta. Highly recommended when visiting San Francisco!
This is such a great restaurant. The atmosphere has that old school Italian vibe with white tablecloths, nicely dressed waiters, and impeccable service. The desserts we had were spot on. They have homemade pastas for a really good price as well. We were just enjoying a late night cocktail & dessert this time.
